Personal Stories and Themes

-My first story is from when I was about eight years old. I remember my grandma saying that she loved my artwork and that I should be an artist when I grow up. I guess I never really considered art to be a career back then, instead I thought it was more of a hobby. A couple years later I remember saying to myself how much I would hate being an artist for a living because they never make any money. For some reason there was always this assumption in my mind that artists were always poor. I think this story is funny because today I really couldn't imagine myself being anything else but an artist. I would rather be an artist and be happy with my career, than have a job that I don't like at all. Art is my passion and that's something that I'm proud of today, especially because I have come a very long way since then.
My next story also involves art- When I was in elementary school, there was a bookmark contest being held at the library. I decided to enter, with no intention of winning because there were so many great artists in our school. A week later or so I remember they announced over the loudspeaker who won in each grade level. When they said my name I couldn't believe it! That was probably the best school day that year. =]

  3. I think that's what it was like for most of us at that age. None of us were ever told about art as a job, mostly because our parents were scared that their kids would become starving artists living in their crappy studio, but the career field aint' what it used to be boys and girls. Now we know that this is what we're doing, and I'm excited to see what we can really do.

  4. I totally agree with the statement you are making in your first blog story. I would definitely rather make less money doing something I love than being rich doing something I hate. I think that's a truth everyone needs to find in themselves and I couldn't imagine you as anything but a great artist.

  6. You should definitely pursue art for your future! you're grandma is wise, you should have believed her from the beginning ;). my sister was always like that too, with the whole "starving artist" thing. I guess that's a misconception everybody gets when they're young which is sad. also, congrats on your fancy bookmark woman! nice accomplishment.
